Like other Islamic stories for kids, Prophet Sulaiman’s story gives parents a simple way to explore faith and important lessons with their children.

Who Was Prophet Sulaiman?

Prophet Sulaiman, known as Solomon in English, was the son of Prophet Dawud. Both were prophets, and Allah tells us in the Quran that He gave them knowledge. Prophet Sulaiman (AS) also became a king and recognized his abilities and kingdom as blessings from Allah, not reasons for pride. Surah An-Naml tells us that Allah taught Sulaiman the speech of birds and that his forces included humans, jinn, and birds. From the beginning, his story connects knowledge and leadership with gratitude to Allah.

“And We certainly gave to Dawood and Sulaiman knowledge, and they said, ‘Praise is due to Allah, who has favored us over many of His believing servants.’”

What Special Gifts Did Allah Give Prophet Sulaiman?

The Quran describes several extraordinary gifts that Allah gave his prophet. These gifts help children understand why his story is so memorable, while the Quran also connects them with Allah’s favor and Sulaiman’s gratitude.

  • He was given knowledge and wisdom.
  • He was taught the language of birds and was able to understand the warning of an ant.
  • His organized forces included humans, jinn, and birds.
  • The wind was subjected to him, and some jinn worked for him by Allah’s permission.l

These gifts were not simply signs of power. They also came with responsibility and tested how Sulaiman would respond to Allah’s blessings.

“And David was succeeded by Solomon, who said, “O people! We have been taught the language of birds, and been given everything ˹we need˺. This is indeed a great privilege.”

Prophet Sulaiman and the Ant

Prophet Sulaiman story for kids

One of the best-known parts of Prophet Sulaiman story takes place in a valley of ants. As his forces approached, an ant warned the others to enter their homes so they would not be crushed without the soldiers realizing it.

And when they came across a valley of ants, an ant warned, “O ants! Go quickly into your homes so Solomon and his armies do not crush you, unknowingly.”  27:18 An-Naml

Sulaiman understood the warning and smiled. What he did next is especially important: he turned to Allah and prayed to remain grateful for His blessings.

So Solomon smiled in amusement at her words, and prayed, “My Lord! Inspire me to ˹always˺ be thankful for Your favours which You have blessed me and my parents with, and to do good deeds that please you. Admit me, by Your mercy, into ˹the company of˺ Your righteous servants.”  27:19 An-Naml

Prophet Sulaiman had great power, but he never forgot that everything he had came from Allah. Even his encounter with a little ant reminded him to give thanks.

This is a good moment to ask your child, “What is one gift you can thank Allah for today?”

The Hoopoe Brings News of the Queen of Sheba

Prophet Sulaiman story for kids

One day, Prophet Sulaiman (AS) noticed that the hoopoe was missing. When the bird returned, it brought news from the land of Sheba, where a queen and her people were worshipping the sun instead of Allah.

˹One day˺ he inspected the birds, and wondered, “Why is it that I cannot see the hoopoe? Or could he be absent? 27-20 An-Naml

It was not long before the bird came and said, “I have found out something you do not know. I have just come to you from Sheba with sure news. 27:22 An-Naml

I found her and her people prostrating to the sun instead of Allah. For Satan has made their deeds appealing to them—hindering them from the ˹Right˺ Way and leaving them unguided  27-24 An-Naml

Sulaiman did not accept the news immediately. He decided to check whether it was true, then sent the hoopoe back with a letter for the queen.

Solomon said, “We will see whether you are telling the truth or lying. 27-27 An-Naml

This part of the story teaches children to check information carefully and use knowledge wisely.

A note for parents: The Quran refers to her as the Queen of Sheba without mentioning her name. In traditional Islamic tafsir books, she is known as Bilqis.

Prophet Sulaiman’s Letter to the Queen

The Queen of Sheba received Sulaiman’s letter and read it to her advisers. The Quran tells us the letter came from Sulaiman, began with Bismillah, and asked her not to be arrogant but to come to him in submission.

The Queen ˹later˺ announced, “O chiefs! Indeed, a noble letter has been delivered to me.
27-29 An-Naml

It is from Solomon, and it reads: ‘In the Name of Allah—the Most Compassionate, Most Merciful. 27-30  An-Naml

Do not be arrogant with me, but come to me, fully submitting ˹to Allah˺.’” 27-31 An-Naml

Rather than making a rushed decision, the queen consulted her advisers. She later sent Sulaiman a gift, but he made it clear that what Allah had given him was better than what they offered.

This part of the story gives children an interesting look at leadership: Sulaiman delivers his message clearly, while the queen consults others before deciding what to do.

The Throne, the Glass Palace, and the Queen’s Choice

Before the queen arrived, Prophet Sulaiman gathered his chiefs and asked which of them could bring him her throne. When it appeared before him in an instant, he recognized it as a blessing from Allah and a test of his gratitude.

Solomon asked, “O chiefs! Which of you can bring me her throne before they come to me in ˹full˺ submission?” 27:38

One mighty jinn responded, “I can bring it to you before you rise from this council of yours. And I am quite strong and trustworthy for this ˹task˺.” 27:39

But the one who had knowledge of the Scripture said, “I can bring it to you in the blink of an eye.” So when Solomon saw it placed before him, he exclaimed, “This is by the grace of my Lord to test me whether I am grateful or ungrateful. And whoever is grateful, it is only for their own good. But whoever is ungrateful, surely my Lord is Self-Sufficient, Most Generous.” 27: 40 An-Naml

Later, the queen was invited into a magnificent palace. When she saw the glass floor, she thought it was water and lifted her dress to walk through it. Prophet Sulaiman explained that the floor was actually made of glass. The queen then acknowledged that she had been wrong and declared her submission to Allah, the Lord of the worlds, alongside Sulaiman.

This part of the story gives children something important to think about. The queen was a powerful ruler, yet she was willing to admit her mistake and accept the truth. Her story teaches us that no matter how powerful or wealthy we are, we should remain humble and willing to recognize what is right.

Who was Prophet Sulaiman (AS)?

Prophet Sulaiman was a prophet and king and the son of Prophet Dawud. The Quran tells us that Allah gave him knowledge and taught him the speech of birds. He is known as Solomon in English.

Prophet Sulaiman is known for his knowledge, leadership, understanding the speech of birds, hearing an ant’s warning, and the extraordinary gifts Allah gave him. The wind was subjected to him, and some jinn worked for him by Allah’s permission. His story repeatedly connects these blessings with gratitude to Allah.

As Sulaiman’s forces approached a valley, an ant warned the others to enter their homes so they would not be crushed unknowingly. Sulaiman understood the warning, smiled, and asked Allah to help him remain grateful. The account appears in Surah An-Naml 27:18–19.

The hoopoe brought news from Sheba about a woman who ruled there and whose people worshipped the sun instead of Allah. Sulaiman said he would find out whether the hoopoe was telling the truth, then sent the bird back with a letter.

The Quran describes a woman who ruled over the people of Sheba but does not give her name. Bilqis is the traditional name commonly used for the Queen of Sheba in later Islamic accounts.

The Quran specifically says that Sulaiman was taught the speech of birds and describes him understanding an ant’s warning. For a Quran-based retelling, these are the clearest examples to share with children.
